Mr Hussey, the hotel's first owner, expressed his customer service ambitions for the hotel at its opening on 3rd December 1853. The language may have changed but the traditional values have not.

"Mr Hussey knew from experience, the importance of first impressions, and how much influence they had in prolonging or shortening the stay of visitors in any town. He proposed therefore to conduct his hotel upon a liberal scale and to unite with it economical charges, so that whoever honoured his house with their company, should go away pleased and satisfied..."
